Who’s Your Daddy?

Why prayer is more for us than it is for God

Have you ever asked yourself this question- If God already knows my needs, why do I still need to pray?

Prayer is many things. It could be a simple conversation with God. And it also is a way we enforce the Will of God in our lives. But majorly, it is recognized as a means of making our needs known to God, even though when the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, He said to them (in the account of Matthew), “... Your Father already knows what you need before you ask Him...”

But Philippians 4v6 tells us not to be anxious about anything and to make our requests known to God in thanksgiving.

So, is God contradicting His Word?

The God consciousness

A pattern is seen in Matthew 6:9-13 (GNT) as Jesus teaches us how to pray — the emphasis is GOD himself...

This, then, is how you should pray:

  • Our Father in heaven, may Your holy name be honoured: first acknowledging that God is not of this world, therefore, He is NOT limited to the possibilities of earth. He is above and beyond ¹. And that alone, makes Him worthy of all praise.
  • May Your Kingdom come; may Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven: scripture says, “Forever, O Lord, thy Word is settled in heaven" ². This, then, is an expression of a yearning; that the settlement in heaven might invade earth by reason of the presence of God — His Lordship.
  • Give us today the food we need: acknowledges that He alone can sustain the life He has given us.
  • Forgive us the wrongs we have done, as we forgive the wrongs that others have done to us: the good in our hearts is ONLY an outflow of His deposition in us- we show mercy because we have received mercy from Him.
  • Do not bring us to hard testing, but keep us safe from the Evil One: the good, as well as the unpleasantries of life are all subject to His authority.
  • And in view of all these, what shall we then say? Truly, “[For] Yours is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever. Amen."

Prayer is to bring us into God’s point of view.

If our Father already knows our needs and has by extension made provision for them, then we pray in order to come into that knowledge and thereby take hold of that supply, strength, joy and freedom in Him.

This, the God consciousness that prayer creates, gives the highest meaning to Phil 4v6. For when the anxieties of our hearts overpower us, we should remember and take them to the One who is Supreme over them. Then the peace that surpasses all understanding will flood our hearts in this troubled world ³ as we cast our cares on Him ⁴. Because in prayer our eyes are opened to see the One who is the Prince of Peace, the One who causes all things to work according to the counsel of His own will, the One who answers to no one and is God all by Himself, who has all power and is in control of all things.

Prayer is more for us, but it is a hundred percent about God! It is coming into the reality of heaven; the consciousness of His love, greatness and presence.

Randomly collected thoughts on prayer...

Pastor E. A Adeboye says, “When prayer doesn’t work, try Praise!” I believe that the efficacy of Praise is in it’s ability to bring us into the knowledge of God, for when our soul remembers and delights in the mighty deeds of God hope and faith has no choice but to be stirred. Whereas, prayer at times always has ways of returning the focus back to ourselves. No wonder the Lord’s Prayer starts with Praise!

I’ve been saying this for years, the greatest spiritual warfare is worshipping and loving Jesus — it is the enforcement of the defeat! ~ Unknown

This is the sign you need to see and exalt God above your issues!
